New data from the World Health Organization (WHO) has brought a critical issue to light: over 1 billion people are now living with a mental health condition. This includes common issues like anxiety and depression, which are affecting people of all ages and backgrounds.

Mental health disorders are more than just a personal struggle; they are now the second-leading cause of long-term disability worldwide. They have a massive economic impact, costing the global economy an estimated US$1 trillion annually just from depression and anxiety.

The new reports, World Mental Health Today and the Mental Health Atlas 2024, show a mix of progress and major challenges. While many countries have new mental health policies, government spending on mental health remains low. The median spending is only 2% of total health budgets, which is simply not enough

  • A Call for Action: Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, urged global leaders to treat mental health as a basic human right.

  • The Global Picture: High-income countries spend up to US$ 65 per person on mental health, while low-income countries spend as little as 4 cents!

  • A Lack of Professionals: There's a severe shortage of mental health workers, especially in developing nations.

To tackle this growing crisis, the WHO is calling on governments to take urgent action. This includes increasing funding, creating new laws to protect mental health patients' rights, and expanding access to community-based care.

The time to act is now. By working together, we can reduce the stigma around mental health and ensure everyone has access to the support they need.
